South Yarra, Horace Petty precinct

Located in the heart of South Yarra along busy Simmons Street, Surrey Road and Malvern Road, the South Yarra precinct is home to 396 households. It includes a mix of existing towers built between 1965 and 1968 and new developments. The Simmons Street development will deliver 522 modern 1,2,3 and 4-bedroom homes replacing outdated and unfit low rise homes, along with quality open spaces and mixed use retail and community spaces. It is due for completion late 2026.

The South Yarra local housing office is located at 259 Malvern Road.

Renters living at 259 Malvern Road have started the relocations process due to be complete by February 2026.

Renters living at 2 Simmons Street and 1 Surrey Road are not currently required to relocate.

We do not anticipate any further relocations before July 2026 but we will keep communicating with you.

What does this mean for renters in social housing high-rise neighbourhoods?

This is a long-term project that will happen in careful stages. When it’s time to move, renters are given plenty of notice and help to find a suitable new home including homes in your current neighbourhood.

When new homes are built renters have the right to return to their neighbourhood based on their ongoing eligibility, needs and suitability of the new homes.
