North Melbourne precinct

Located across 3 sites in the heart of North Melbourne between, Alfred, Melrose and Sutton Streets and Boundary Road, as well as Canning Street and Abbotsford Street, the North Melbourne precincts are home to 590 households. The precinct is a mix of existing towers built between 1963 and 1970 and new developments on Abbotsford Street, North Melbourne.

159 Melrose Street is a dedicated old-persons high-rise, with a range of dedicated supports in place.

The local housing office is located at 33 Alfred Street in North Melbourne.

Renters living at 33 Alfred Street, North Melbourne have started the relocations process which is due to be complete by February 2025. Renters living at 159 Melrose Street, 12 Sutton Street and 76 Canning Street are not currently required to relocate.

We do not anticipate any further relocations before July 2026 but we will keep communicating with you.

Have your say

The lived experience of social housing renters and community will help shape the design approach to achieve new standards in accessibility, sustainability and connection to community and the local neighbourhood.

You can complete the online survey on our Engage Victoria page.

Our online survey closes at 11:59 pm on Sunday 22 December 2024.

Expressions of interest open: North Melbourne Community Consultative Committee

We’re establishing a Community Consultative Committee (CCC) for North Melbourne. It will bring together renters and community members to work together to give advice to Homes Victoria on the North Melbourne redevelopment. If you’d like to be involved, please complete the expression of interest (EOI) form by Tuesday 31 December.

What does this mean for renters in social housing high-rise neighbourhoods?

This is a long-term project that will happen in careful stages. When it’s time to move, renters are given plenty of notice and help to find a suitable new home including homes in your current neighbourhood.

When new homes are built renters have the right to return to their neighbourhood based on their ongoing eligibility, needs and suitability of the new homes.
